People who work on open source software usually do this free of charge, especially those who work on smaller projects without a big company behind it to back them financially.
The software they create is available for everyone, most of the time even for free, yet there are literally thousands of man-hours that went into creating and maintaining those projects.
I think those projects deserve some form of compensation for that, even if its just a little amount of money. It lets the developers know that their work is appreciated and helps them cover other costs.
If the open source community can work together to make these awesome projects come to life then I think we as, end-users of those projects, can also work together to give them some form of compensation to help ensure the future of these projects.
